An international holiday was established to recognize Mandela’s contributions to peace in South Africa and his legacy. However, Mandela Day is more than just a day of fun; the tradition of helping those in need through volunteer work or community service is its central message.
The Makeba Centre for Girls was founded by Dr. Miriam Makeba to provide a home for destitute and/or abused girls between the ages 11-18 years. The Centre was established to cater for the needs of the girls by providing a home environment, professional counseling and support, practical vocational training and life skills development services to enable the girls to become self-sufficient and to prepare them for re-integration into society.
The centre has not been upheld to its full potential and needed some help to get on track. We decided to join this initiative as part of our Mandela Day and sponsor cleaning and painting equipment as well as 16 employees who volunteered to spend their 67 minutes at the centre for girls.
The second half of our day was spent at one of our ongoing initiatives Itlhokomeleng Association for Aged & Disabled at their Mandela Day Celebration, which was the perfect way for us to honour and share the Celebration of the Late Legend Rolihlahla Nelson Mandela who will always be remembered throughout the world. We donated two items on their Wishlist, a washing machine and a stove, with thanks to our generous Directors. We also did an inhouse non-perishable food item donation drive which we brought through on the day and spoilt the members with some delicious cupcakes. What a way to end an amazing Mandela Day!
Mandela Day is more than a celebration of Madiba’s life and legacy; it is a global movement to honour his life’s work and to change the world for the better. #ExpertCares, here for you!
